The good news

What is real Christianity?

Christianity is not simply about becoming religious, improving yourself, or belonging to a church. At its heart is the good news that sinful people can be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.

If you are searching for truth, wondering who Jesus is, or asking how you can know God, this page is for you.

God

We belong to the God who made us.

The Bible begins with God. He made all things and gives every person life and breath. He is perfectly holy: entirely pure, good and just. He rules all that He has made, and no one is outside His authority.

We were made to know God, to love Him and to live for His glory. Our lives are not our own. Because He is our Creator, we are accountable to Him for how we think, speak and live.

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

Revelation 4:11

Our problem

Sin separates us from God.

Sin is more than making mistakes or failing to reach our potential. It is rebellion against God: refusing Him His rightful place and failing to love, trust, obey and honour Him. Sin appears in our thoughts and desires as well as in our words and actions.

This is not only someone else’s problem. Every one of us has sinned. We may compare ourselves favourably with other people, but God’s standard is His own perfect holiness.

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”

Romans 3:23

God cannot pretend that evil does not matter. We are guilty before Him, death lies before us, and beyond death is judgement. Religion, morality and good works cannot erase our guilt or repair our relationship with God. We need more than advice. We need rescue.

03

Jesus Christ

God’s answer is a person.

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. He became truly human without ceasing to be God. He entered the world He had made, lived among ordinary people and obeyed His Father perfectly. He was tempted, yet He never sinned.

Jesus is not merely a religious teacher or an example of love. Christianity centres upon Christ Himself. He came to save sinners—to do for us what we could never do for ourselves.

04

The cross and resurrection

Jesus died in the place of sinners—and rose again.

On the cross, Jesus willingly gave His life as a substitute. He did not die merely as a martyr or to set an example. He bore the punishment due to sinners and satisfied God’s justice, so that all who trust in Him may be forgiven and accepted by God.

He was buried, and on the third day He rose bodily from the dead. The resurrection is not an inspiring symbol. It is God’s declaration that Christ’s saving work is complete. Jesus is alive, death is defeated, and He is Lord.

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

1 Corinthians 15:3–4

Repentance and faith

Salvation is received, not earned.

God calls every person to repent and believe the Gospel. Repentance is a turning from sin unto God. It is more than feeling sorry or trying to become respectable. Saving faith is resting and trusting in Jesus Christ alone—who He is and what He has done—rather than depending on yourself, your good works or your religion.

Salvation is entirely by God’s grace. Everyone who truly trusts in Christ is forgiven and counted righteous before God, not because faith earns anything, but because Christ and His righteousness are received by faith.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Ephesians 2:8–9

We cannot change our own hearts. God the Holy Spirit must give new life—what the Bible calls the new birth. Yet this is not a reason to delay. Christ commands sinners to repent and believe, and He receives all who come to Him for mercy.

How should I respond?

Turn to God and trust in Jesus Christ.

Do not rest in a decision, a feeling or a form of words. Look away from yourself to Christ.

  1. 1

    Turn to God in repentance.

Confess your sin and leave every hope of saving yourself.

  2. 2

    Trust in Jesus Christ alone.

Rely on His perfect life, His death in the place of sinners and His resurrection.

  3. 3

    Read the Bible.

Begin with John’s Gospel and ask what it shows you about Jesus.

  4. 4

    Pray honestly.

Ask God for mercy and a new heart. Prayer does not save, and repeating a formula is not conversion; Christ saves those who come to Him.

  5. 5

    Seek a faithful local church.

Hear the Bible preached and learn with other Christians.
